City Hall

St. Augustine weighs $17 million Monday for a new A1A fire station

Resolution 2026-34 authorizes up to $17,000,000 in revenue bonds to replace the fire station at A1A and Red Cox Road with a 12,790-square-foot building that would serve Anastasia Island and downtown. The repayment term and the interest cost are blanks in the packet, to be filled when the bonds sell. The commission meets Monday at 5 p.m. in the Alcazar Room.

public-safety

Driver killed in fiery I-95 crash near International Golf Parkway

A sedan left southbound Interstate 95 early Saturday, struck trees and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol as reported by News4JAX and the St. Johns Citizen. Troopers had not identified the driver in either report, and the crash remains under investigation.

City Hall

The city's draft Oct. 12 minutes do not record two of the night's votes

The written record of St. Augustine's Oct. 12 meeting goes to the commission for approval Monday. As drafted it records no vote on the motion awarding the horse carriage franchises, and the interim city manager item carries a MOTION heading with no motion, no second and no roll under it. The same packet's bond paperwork gives the interim term a third version: starting Dec. 16, with no end date.

Bike share opens with 14 stations and two answers on the price

The bike share this paper previewed Oct. 28 went live Friday with a ribbon-cutting in the Plaza de la Constitucion: 14 stations, 170 docks, 90 bikes, run by local operator Drifters on public land under the city's Mobility Plan. The prices the program website did not carry in October are published now, twice, and they disagree: the homepage prices a one-hour ride at $5.50, the FAQ prices the first hour at $10, and the six-month pass is $90 in one FAQ answer and $99 in the next. The Flagler College student discount the city's release promised is on neither page.

St. Augustine City Commission

St. Augustine pays $40,000 and takes down gun signs to end lawsuit

The St. Johns Citizen reports the city settled Florida Carry's preemption suit: $40,000 to cover the group's attorney fees, the signs prohibiting firearms at public buildings removed, and the case dismissed with prejudice this week. The 5-0 settlement vote came Oct. 26, the same afternoon the commission held the fifteen-minute closed session this paper reported in October. The statute that permitted that closed door also sets its price: the transcript becomes a public record now that the case is over.

Rooftops

Board denies 250,000-square-foot Inman Road business park twice in one day

The St. Johns Citizen reports commissioners voted down the FL St. Augustine Inman plan on Nov. 3, agreed to hear more testimony, and denied it again 4 to 1. The county's own staff report puts State Road 16 past its capacity already: the segment from I-95 to Inman Road runs at 126.2 percent of capacity in the evening peak, and 184.3 percent once committed development is counted, before this project adds a car. The 58.74-acre site has carried an approved distribution-center entitlement since 2020 and has never been built.

schools

School board passed the enrollment plan 5-0, draft minutes show

The record of the Oct. 13 vote surfaced this week as draft minutes inside the packet for the board's Nov. 10 meeting. Controlled open enrollment for this year carried 5-0 on a motion from Beverly Slough, with no discussion recorded and nobody at public comment speaking to it. The same night's consent agenda carried the $329,860 Bartram Grove school mitigation agreement, the one that says there is no high school room for those 180 homes and will not be within three years.

The Ledger

County and city offices close Nov. 11; garbage collection unchanged

Both governments published Veterans Day schedules this week. Every county office closes Wednesday, Nov. 11, and reopens Thursday, Nov. 12. City of St. Augustine offices close the same day. No garbage, recycling or yard waste collection changes in either jurisdiction, and both county transfer stations stay open. City-owned parking is free for the holiday, except the Historic Downtown Parking Facility, where the entry fee is waived for active-duty and retired military with valid ID.

The courts

Voter guide counts were refiled Nov. 2, the county paper reports

The St. Johns Citizen reported Wednesday that the refiled voter guide charges were filed Nov. 2 in St. Johns County Court and that the case is before County Judge Casey Woolsey. The five defendants face conspiracy and unauthorized voter guide counts, by the Citizen's account, and the felony evidence tampering count a circuit judge dismissed with prejudice on Oct. 16 is not among them. The charging documents themselves remain unreachable from this newsroom, and the promise to report them stands.

Forty-seven listings on the county calendar today. The two ticketed rooms are A Flock of Seagulls at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, doors 6:30, $52.79 to $81.14, and Ellis Paul at Cafe Eleven, doors 7, all ages with a $5 under-21 fee at the door. THE SCENE

Friday, Nov. 6: the First Friday Art Walk opens the galleries for free from 5 to 9, Bruce Cockburn plays the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall at 8 with doors at 6:30, the Mill Top runs three sets ending at midnight, and Blistur holds Tradewinds until 1:30 in the morning. Hastings runs its Fall Harvest Festival through Saturday. Not one bar on tonight's list prints a cover.

sports

Marcus Stokes of Nease wins Davey O'Brien quarterback of the week

The Davey O'Brien Foundation voted the Memphis junior its National Quarterback of the Week for week nine after he went 29 of 35 for 371 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-22 win over Army, with a rushing score on top and no turnover. He is the first winner from the American Conference this year. Memphis says no player in program history had accounted for five or more touchdowns in back-to-back FBS games before. He played at Nease, and he is tied for the national lead with 25 touchdown passes.

Nights & Days

Light-Up Night honorees named, and downtown STAR service ends at 3

Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline named four business owners to throw the switch in the Plaza de la Constitucion at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, one each from West King Street, San Marco Avenue, Anastasia Boulevard and Aviles Street. In a release posted the same day, the city said the STAR Circulator's downtown runs will end at 3 p.m. every day of the season, with nighttime service continuing only on Anastasia Island from Nov. 22.

The Ledger

Three county kitchens were ordered closed in the last week of October

The state's weekly emergency closure extract for the week ending Nov. 1 posted, and it answers the question the Nov. 1 inspections table left open: all three county licenses whose inspections ended in Emergency order recommended were approved for closure. Terra & Acqua in St. Augustine was approved to close Oct. 26 on roach and fly activity, and its reopening columns are blank in the file. South A Philly Steaks and Hoagies closed Oct. 27 on roach activity, with Oct. 28 and 10:05 in the state's reopening columns. Main St Pizza & Ice Cream in Hastings closed Oct. 28 on rodent activity, its second closure row in eight days, with Oct. 29 and 13:22 in the reopening columns. The rows, with the state's own column labels.

Some polling places moved since 2024, and polls run 7 to 7 today

Voting today costs nothing and has one condition worth checking before you leave: the place. The Supervisor of Elections says some election day polling locations have changed since the 2024 cycle, and election day voting is at your assigned precinct only. Bring a photo ID with a signature; the voter information card does not count. A mail ballot still at home has to be driven to 4455 Avenue A by 7 p.m. After the polls: live music in at least five rooms tonight, free trivia around the county, and a Terrific Tuesday Mockingbird at the Limelight at 7:30. The beach stays out, with the rip current risk high into late tonight.

The sand Ponte Vedra Beach lost to Milton is due back in 2028

The county's coastal projects site now carries a page for a Ponte Vedra Beach FEMA Category G project: sand from an offshore borrow area, placed where the North Ponte Vedra Restoration finished in the summer of 2024, with construction expected in the summer or fall of 2028. The page prints the funding split, 75 percent FEMA and 12.5 percent each from the state and the county, and no dollar figure and no volume of sand. One beach south, the South Ponte Vedra Category G project is still waiting on 12 easements, with construction expected to begin in the spring of 2027.

Monday, Nov. 2: a singer at Prohibition Kitchen from 6 to 9, the Tradewinds grid runs three acts deep into the night, the Mill Top plays until 8:30, and eight trivia nights run from Kingfish at 6 to Cafe Eleven at 7:30. Nothing on tonight's list prints a cover. And the polls open at 7 tomorrow morning.

Nightlife & Local Music

Jake Shimabukuro plays Cafe Eleven at 8, and Sunday ends by 10

The ukulele player who sells out theaters is in a 501 A1A Beach Boulevard room tonight, seated, all ages, with a $5 under-21 fee at the door. Eighteen listings run on the bureau calendar, Mill Top has sets at noon and 4:30, Prohibition Kitchen has De Lions of Jah at 6, the free STAR bus runs 9 to 9, and the clocks went back an hour overnight.

Cheap Eats & Late Night

Halloween Saturday: a free show at 7, three rooms past 11

Tangled Orchid plays Colonial Oak free at 7. Mill Top's own page runs the Chuck Eliot Duo to 11:59. The corn maze stays open to 10. The STAR shuttle is free until 11 tonight, the rip current risk is high into Sunday, and the last early-voting ballots go in by 6 p.m.

Halloween eve: the haunted trail moved, and tonight is its last night

EstuSCARY runs 7 to 9:30 tonight and then it is over; it does not run on Halloween. The page now says LOCATION UPDATE: Guana River Dam, 505 Guana River Road, not the South Beach Access lot it said last week, and at least one event calendar still lists the old one. $20 online, $30 at the trail. The free hour is the Shores trunk-or-treat, 6 to 7. All eight county football teams play tonight, the bureau lists 37 rooms with live music and prints a cover on none, and the rip current risk stays high through Sunday evening.

THE SCENE

Halloween is Saturday, the Amp is dark, and two shows are free

The rip current statement runs to 8 p.m. Friday, so the water is out for two more days and Saturday is the first clean one. Colonial Oak is free both Thursday and Halloween night, 7 to 10, with Tangled Orchid on the 31st. Prohibition Kitchen has four bands across three nights and prints no cover on any of them. EstuScary is $20 to $30 and wants you in costume. Saturday has a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms after 2 p.m.

Tuesday

Fifteen sets on a Tuesday, and nobody prints a cover

The visitor bureau's music calendar lists twelve live sets in St. Johns County today, from noon at the Mill Top to one in the morning at the Tradewinds. Three more are on venue calendars the bureau's list does not carry, including a 1 p.m. early show at the Tradewinds and a second Mill Top set at 4:30. Not one of the four documents prints a cover charge or a ticket price for any of the fifteen. Every room on this list is a bar, and the earliest one starts while you are still at work.

Five county teams open the regionals Friday, two draw the FIT

The postseason pairings are posted. St. Augustine (9-1) hosts Lincoln and Creekside (8-2) hosts Lake Mary on Friday, Nov. 13, while Bartram Trail, Nease and Ponte Vedra travel. Beachside and Tocoi Creek open the FHSAA's Florida Invitational Tournament a night earlier, Thursday, Nov. 12, with Beachside home against Yulee. Menendez is on no card.

The School Board workshops six topics today on one page of packet

The board meets at 9 this morning at 40 Orange Street and via Webex to talk through six topics, from Student Progression Plan updates to a dental MOU, and the agenda packet behind all six is one page, which is the agenda itself. A workshop takes no votes. The next voting meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m. The board's reorganization meeting falls Nov. 17, two weeks after today's District 4 election. And the district's minutes page still stops at Sept. 22, so what the board voted on Oct. 13 remains published only as video.

The Visiting Side

Jaguars 42, Colts 7, and the first laugher of the season

Thirty-five quiet minutes of football and then five touchdowns in the middle two quarters at EverBank. Lawrence threw fourteen passes, ten landed, three scored. Tuten ran for 104 and scored twice, once on the ground and once through the air. Lane took an interception back 92 yards. The Jaguars are 5-2, and Thursday they are in Baltimore.

Beachside 57, Westside 0: the season's last missing final lands

The scoreboard that printed Status Unknown the night after the game now prints a Friday final from Barracuda Stadium, and MaxPreps carries the same score. Beachside closes the regular season 6-4. No playoff pairing naming a county school is posted anywhere this paper reads.

The haunted trail is the 29th and the 30th. Not Halloween.

GTM's EstuSCARY trail runs two nights, Thursday the 29th and Friday the 30th, 7 to 9:30. The web address for it says oct-29-31 and the page never says the 31st once. Free trick-or-treating on St. George Street runs until 4 this afternoon. The Alligator Farm is open for Creatures of the Night tonight until 9. The Hastings trunk-or-treat that was on for tonight is canceled. And if you are under 16, the Elkton corn maze will turn you away at the gate without an adult.

Screens and Sound

Under 17? The 8 o'clock show needs an adult who is 21.

Both cinema chains in this county publish their door rules and neither puts them on the poster. At Epic, anybody under 17 needs an adult of 21 or older for any film starting at 8 p.m. or later, whatever it is rated. Under 12 cannot see an R at all. Twelve to 16 needs a parent sitting there the whole way through. Photo ID is required for an R. And for Halloween week there is one more: masks, hoods and makeup that cover your face are not allowed in.
